The first rule of Book Club: you do not talk about Book Club.
I’m sorry. It had to be done. Now that that’s out of my system, here’s what this is all about: I pick a nonfiction book to read, you read it along with me. I post a new blog entry about the book, and we have a discussion using the comment system.
If anyone is interested in participating, post a comment here. Feel free to suggest books. Here are some books I hope to get to reading sometime soon, in no particular order:
The Pornography of Meat by Carol Adams.
Ecology of Freedom by Murray Bookchin. (Currently being discussed on the Vegan Freak Forums.)
Critique of Political Economy by Karl Marx.
Capital, Volume I by Karl Marx.
Philosophy and Revolution by Raya Dunayevskaya.
The Rosa Luxemburg Reader.
Essential Works of Lenin.
The Crisis of European Sciences and Transcendental Phenomenology by Edmund Husserl.
Phenomenology of Spirit by G.W.F. Hegel.
The Birth of Christianity by John Dominic Crossan.
Don’t feel you have to suggest something I’ve listed here.

The Internet can be a wonderful resource for information, exchanging ideas, or just viewing naughty things. I find that 99% of the time I’m online, I’m usually level-headed. Instead of blurting out what I’m thinking, I’ll take time to cool down, post a balanced reply, and leave it at that. (The other 1%, well, I’m only human and I do lose my cool sometimes. But when I realize that, I back off instead of continuing to read and become more irritated.) If I feel I don’t fit into a community, I’ll leave. If I do leave, I do not crawl over to other places on the Internet and bitch publicly about how stupid/annoying/fascist/elitist/dense/etc. people on such-and-such forums are. As a moderator on the Vegan Freak Forums, I’ve been truly amazed by how many of our former users have left to go on to bitch about us. I won’t name the individuals, blogs, or Internet communities in question; if you’re really curious, Google it. Some have left on their own, others have been banned. People have said all sorts of nasty things about us, most of which simply isn’t true.
I’m quickly learning to ignore what people say online. It’s really not worth the frustration to take it seriously, and I have better things to do with my life.
